Practically Cousins
Surf + Skate
Three practices strongly rooted in a shared culture, yet celebrated for the gateways to self-discovery.
Here we examine how surfing, skating, and graffiti intersect, showing how motion, creativity, and personal style flow between them.
(Research)
To inform the content of this section, we reached out directly to creatives who live within these industries and share a love for surfing, skating, and graffiti. We also conducted research into typographic layouts inspired by ocean patterns, along with a deeper exploration of how rhythm and movement translate across visual systems. In addition, we looked into the history of graffiti-covered skate parks and the social events that created space for both cultures to intersect and evolve together.
(Experience)
This section focuses on how surfing - reading waves and understanding the natural patterns of the ocean - can influence strong typographic layouts through rhythm, flow, and movement. It also explores the deep relationship between skating and graffiti, where both exist within urban environments and share a similar sense of motion, risk, and expression. Together, surfing, skating, and graffiti form an interconnected visual language that informs Sire’s design approach.
